Once a booming town of 20,000 people, Elliot Lake saw its four mining operations closed down in the 1980s. Instead of accepting defeat, the city began to sell itself as and ideal retirement community. This proved successful, as the city now has stabilized at approximately 12,000 people. With over 4000 lakes in the area holding plentiful stocks of lake trout, rainbow trout, speckled trout, Pike, bass, and walleye Elliot Lake is definitely a fisherman's paradise.
There are more than 4,000 lakes surrounding Elliot Lake and dozens of them, some of them over 200 feet deep, hold the largest stock of lake trout in Ontario. Speckle and rainbow trout, bass and pike are also plentiful.

The rods needed for pike fishing should be stout nine foot and in the 8-9 weight class. This is needed for casting large wind resistant flies, and for the sheer power of these fish. Large Arbor reels are best as they allow you to pick up line faster. A smooth drag is needed to tire out the pike as soon as possible.
