Fireside Lodge (Sioux Lookout, ONTARIO)

Affordable and accessible best describe Fireside Lodge as a destination for all anglers. Easy to get to, Fireside is located on Little Vermillion Lake, which is truly beautiful and unspoiled. Thanks to a great catch-and-release program, the fishing keeps on getting better and better. Location details: Little Vermilion is the largest in an eleven-lake system. Approximately sixteen miles long, Little Vermillion is a long narrow body of water with a lower and upper section. These spring-fed waters are deep and cold with numerous bays, reefs, and deep weed beds that have created excellent fish-holding structures. The lake forage consists of whitefish, cisco, suckers, perch, various minnow life, and crayfish. With the combination of all these factors, the unpressured-waters of Little Vermilion offers our guests some of the best sport fishing Canada has to offer; year after year. New modern log cabins are nestled in the trees along the lakefront, providing a comfortable home-away-from-home atmosphere for your stay. Lodge rooms also accommodate our guests, each with a refrigerator to store any "goodies" they choose to bring along. Modern bathroom facilities are located in the lodge and in the American Plan cabins to make your stay in the Great North a comfortable one.

Fireside Lodge is blessed with some incredible warm water fishing. Big Smallmouth, Northern Pike, Musky and even Tiger Musky are all available for fly fishers. Great top water action for all anglers!

For the Smallmouth we found bass poppers were effective as well as wooly buggers and especially size 8-10 Muddler Minnows. The bass really slammed them near weedbeds! For the Northern Pike and Musky, we recommend tube flies, Deceivers and other large patterns with good built-in action. The best colour at Fireside was Blue & White and Chartreuse.

For the Bass we recommend a six or seven weight matched to floating line. We also recommend you bring along a spare spool with intermediate line to help you get down in the water column. For the freshwater sharks (Pike & Musky) you definitely need 9-10 weight rods matched to good quality reels with robust drag systems. Floating line, intermediate and full-sinking or sinktip lines will all be necessary to fish all conditions.
