MarMac Lodge (Sault Ste Marie, ONTARIO)

Situated on the remote shores of beautiful twenty-seven mile Esnagi Lake's unspoiled wilderness, MarMac Lodge has been providing the highest quality fishing trips available in Canada for over 35 years. Being accessible only by float-plane or train limits the number of anglers on our waters. Not only does this make your holiday with us unique but also successful as we can offer you fantastic Walleye, Northern Pike, Perch, Whitefish, Brook and Lake Trout fishing. MarMac Lodge is committed to providing the very best accommodations and services possible. Cabins are fully modern (new or recently and extensively renovated) with comfortable beds, indoor plumbing, electricity and full kitchens. We offer American or Deluxe Housekeeping Plans at the main lodge, or choose one of our Deluxe Wilderness Outposts, the Northend or Merekeme. We are the only outfitter in the area to offer our guests the comfort of 18ft. Cedar Strip Boats equipped with boat seats and powered by late-model 20hp 4-stroke Yamaha outboards (gas included).

MarMac Lodge is blessed with a wide range of warm and cold water species. Large Northern Pike and Walleye are fun to catch on a fly in shallow bays and off weedy points. The Pike can grow quite large, many specimens are well over 40” in length and over 20 pounds. There are chunky Brook Trout and Lake Trout in some smaller lakes, that are easy to access. Brook Trout are up to five pounds in size with the average in the two-pound range.

Our favourite Pike patterns are large Deceivers in white & blue or white & green (size 1/0 to 2/0). As well, tube flies with treble hooks worked exceptionally well. Our favourite pattern was the Bleeding Mackeral sold bywww.reelflies.ca.For the Brook Trout and Lake Trout, they were focused on sub-surface patterns like sculpin and wooly buggers (leech style flies). Black and olive were the preferred colours. You can find all these patterns atwww.reelflies.ca.

For the Pike and Walleye you want to bring a stout, fast-action fly rod in the 8 to 10 weight size. You need something you can cast large flies and also full-sinking lines. A good quality fly reel with a solid drag is needed for these big fish. For the Brook Trout a five or six weight rod is needed to cast streamers and wooly buggers. Bring both a floating and intermediate line for the trout.
