Maitland River – Fall Steelhead
The fall is a time of change in Ontario—beautiful coloured leaves, cooler days, and best of all—steelhead! Bright chrome steelhead migrate up rivers from the Great Lakes throughout Ontario. One wonderful place to catch them is the Maitland River in southwestern Ontario. This relatively large river is perfect for drift boat trips, providing unparalleled access to walk and wade fly fishing. The perfect guide for this river system is Mike Verhoef of Flyfitters Guide Service. Mike has been guiding in SW Ontario for nearly 20 years and understands the Maitland well. From single hand casting for steelhead to swinging Spey flies with two-handed rods, this river is perfect for all types of fly fishing. Deadly flies include stonefly patterns, egg patterns and various Spey flies in dark colours.
Mike and his fellow guides, thoroughly experienced in fishing the river, know the best locations for locating steelhead as they migrate upstream.
