Transformer Vise

Every once in a while we find something new that really impresses us. The Transformer vise is one of those items that really shines. It is a high quality product that thanks to a fast coupling device on the shaft can be transformed from an in-line vise to tube-fly vise or streamer vise. Three vises in one with just a click.  The stainless steel shaft is in-line full rotary with dual precision ball bearings. All parts of three vises are included with Transformer vise which is great – no extras needed. The steady pedestal base has a useful integrated tool rack and has places for putting your hooks, beads, etc…while tying. Other important Transformer features: interchangeable jaws, adjustable rotary tension, smooth rotary motion, locking position at any angle, shaft fast locking every 45° angle, adjustable height, reversible for left hand tying. Other accessories included: rounded shape bobbin cradle, parachute plier, adjustable spring material clip, pivot thread cradle, allen keys and instruction manual. This unit is really the “cadillac” of fly tying vises. If you love tying flies and are considering an upgrade, then we strongly suggest you look at the Transformer Vise by Stonfo. You can check our some good reviews on their vise on YouTube plus see more at their website: http://www.stonfo.com/site/product/642?parent_section_id=4&category_id=133

OUTCAST FLOAT TUBE ROD RACK

Here is a brilliant idea from the folks at Outcast that makes so much sense for anyone who loves stillwater fly fishing. The Float Tube Rod Rack solves the problem we all have of where to safely stow extra rods when out on a lake. It easily attaches to any float tube and stores even more than fly rods. One of the best things about this storage system, it keeps you rods down flat so they don’t get in the way of your casts. We strongly recommend this simple and very effective tool for improving your float tube fishing for any species!

Goathead Wading Boot Spikes

For those of you who have switched from felt sole wading boots to rubber bottoms, you know how they can get slippery on rocks. We have tried various boots spikes but weren’t generally happy with the performance, until we heard about Goathead Spikes. All this season we have been using them on our Orvis wading boots and they have made a tremendous difference in our wading abilities. Check them out at their website and usually available at local fly shops or online. Cannot recommend them enough.

We receive many emails and messages from anglers asking where they can buy the Quick Release Indicators we use in our TV series. Host Phil Rowley now has them available thru his online store. We use them for lake fishing for trout, for nymphing steelhead and even with bass who are slow-moving due to a cold front. They are great everywhere!

Umpqua Indicator Tippet

Fantastic product we learned about last year for nymphing. Made by Umpqua Feather Merchants the indicator tippet really helps you detect strikes and works better than indicators. Great for trout and steelhead, we strongly recommend you pick up a couple of spools in 3x or 4x for this season. Watch this video featuring guide Graham Bristow who details how to use the indicator tippet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaTNXideMFM

Fishpond Headgate Tippet Holder

This was our favourite new item for 2016 we discovered at a fly shop. Though seemingly pricey, it is well worth the money. Here is why: The spring loaded hinge design allows an angler to easily add, remove and carry most tippet spools with ease. Just clip it on somewhere close and forget about the days of fishing through your waders, vest or pack searching for those loose spools. Dropped your nippers on the hike in? Not to worry, the Headgate also features a built in cutting blade for ultimate convenience.

Mirage Fly Reel

A technologically superior reel conceived and designed from the ground up and built in New England by American craftsmen to battle big fish and defeat corrosive saltwater environments. The new Mirage features a sealed and maintenance-free carbon and stainless steel disc drag system with an aggressive knurled drag knob that goes from zero to full drag in a single drag knob rotation. Patent-pending ball and ramp drag mechanism provides a smooth turning drag that follows a non-linear curve as the drag knob is turned to give smoother adjustments in the fishing and fish-fighting range. The reel is a super large arbor for increased retrieve rates and reduction in line coil. Machined in the USA from strong, yet lightweight 6061 T6 aluminum barstock. Ergonomically designed machined aluminum handle. Quick release spool easily converts from left to right-hand retrieve. Military-spec type III hard coat anodizing. Titanium shaft adds strength without additional weight. Fully radiused reel foot prevents kinked leaders. Low-profile counterweight won’t catch fingers or fly lines. Check it out at orvis.com

FishMask Dirty Dog Grizzly

We are always on the hunt for good quality streamers that work well for trout and smallmouth bass. Our friends at Reelflies have a great new pattern that should work well. The Fishmask Dirty Dog in the grizzly pattern is size 4 is the right size, weighting and coloration to help anglers work a bank or structure trying to trigger a trophy fish into attacking. We really like that this fly is articulated. It comes in natural grizzly and olive colours and is approximately 4 inches long.

Powerflex Wire Bite Tippet by RIO

Fly fishing for Northern Pike and Musky with flies is becoming more and more popular. We often get asked what we like to use to prevent “bite-offs”. Our favourite product by far is RIO’s Powerflex Wire Bite Tippet. It is a tough, flexible nylon-coated wire that’s perfect for sharp toothed critters. This knot-able, braided wire is supple enough to tie directly to the fly. Available in three size options; 20lb, 30lb & 40lb, with 15 feet on each spool. We find for most pike fishing either the 20lb or 30lb is perfect. You can learn more here: http://amzn.to/2mFYWp9

The Big Bug Box

Probably the best designed and most practical flybox we used this past season is The Big Bug Box from Tacky Fly Fishing. Clear lid so you can see the flies at a glance, slits that actually hold the flies in place, and just the right size box for a wader pocket, shirt pocket or your vest. These fly boxes have outstanding design and great application for serious anglers.

Murdich Mini Minnow

One of the top producing flies in the 2016 season is made by Umpqua and is known as the Murdich Mini Minnow. This is a fantastic fly for bass, trout and in larger sizes – for pike and musky. Smallmouth bass really liked this fly in all-white and white/chartreuse.
