The Mattawa Fly Fishing Experience
Mattawa, located just north of Ontario’s renowned Algonquin Park, is a fly fishing destination which is not particularly well known. Yet it lies just off the trans-Canada highway, making it readily accessible, and affordable. It’s an area of pristine wilderness, with outstanding brook trout fishing in its smaller lakes and with husky smallmouth bass and lunker musky in the rivers and larger lakes. What we really like is the large number of places offering a wide range of accommodation options.
We recommend you bring 4-5 weight rods with floating and sinking lines for the brook trout, 6-7 weights for the smallmouth bass, and 9-10 weight rods for the musky. Check out the Mattawa Tourism website for a list of accommodations and guides in the region.
