Lake Superior has some amazing steelhead runs, and some of the best are located in and around Thunder Bay, Ontario. For anglers looking for affordable steelhead fishing and lots of river options, this is the place. Within a few hours drive of Thunder Bay and even right in the heart of the city, the region has numerous rivers and creeks that fill up with steelhead in the spring and fall.
Best runs in the fall begin in November in easily accessible rivers where there is full public access. In the spring, March through April is the hot time..
For equipment we recommend 9 or 10 foot length rods in a seven or eight weight. Floating lines or running lines work well. You can swing a fly or use nymphing techniques to find steelhead. Stonefly, egg, and streamer patterns work very well.
In terms of accommodations and restaurants, there are lots of reasonably priced options right in and around the city
